Después de mucho tiempo sin pasar por la ciudad –un año de pandemia–, no sabía lo que iba a encotrar. Caminé por una ciudad fría, lluviosa muchos días, como suele ser en primavera, con muchos andamios de construcción, muchos trabajos públicos de reparación… y poca gente.

After a long time without going into the city –and a year in pandemic–, I didn’t know what I as going to find. I walked through a cold city, often rainy as it usually is in springtime, with lots of scaffolding and construction work, many public repairings… and few people.

Imposible caminar por esta ciudad y no hacer fotos de la propia ciudad.

Impossible to walk this city and not photograph the city itself.

Una presencia que no se puede ocultar: la gente con máscaras, las calles tomadas por locales más o menos improvisadas que ocupan el espacio que antes ocupaban los carros, el transporte público vacío, las tiendas y restaurantes cerrados, muchas personas viviendo en las aceras, las protestas anti-vacunas y los incentivos para que la gente salga a vacunarse.

Covid is a presence that’s hard to hide: people covering their faces behind mandatory masks, streets are taken by improvised shacks where cars used to park, public transportation mostly empty, stores and restaurants closed, homeless people sleeping on the sidewalks, anti-vaxers staging protests and some stores offering incentives to get a vaccine.

Los museos abiertos por previa cita y con poca gente, algunos, como el Guggenheim, con poco arte. Pero siempre un oasis.

Museums are open by appointment with few people, some, like the Guggenheim, with few art shows. But always an oasis.

Fue lo más sabroso de este paseo, impecable, limpio, mantenido y sembarado de flores para la primavera. Cada día distinto por el clima.

It was the best part of this stay. Impeccable, clean, well kept and full of new springtime blossoms. Each day a different park because of the changing weather.

Aunque la mayoría de los locales cerraban temprano, las luces siguen teniendo su atractivo.

Even though most businesses were closed, nightlights are always attractive.

Ya cuando me iba el clima cambió y las calles se llenaron de gente, de nuevo regresará la normalidad.

When I was getting ready to leave, the weather improved and the streets started to get crowed. New York will go back to normal.
